large fries 7x7

I think that this is arguably the most iconic still life that I've ever painted. It comes with all kinds of socio-political, economic and nutritional baggage. I did paint it but I want to make clear that I do not advocate eating food like this on a regular basis. These fries went uneaten, sacrificed at the altar of high art.

No Hands Bridge #4 7x7

It snowed in Auburn yesterday. Today was unexpectedly clear so I decided to go to one of my favorite places to paint. Even though it didn't snow, it was still quite cold in the canyon.

red pear and water 7x5

I bought a couple of these red pears to put in a salad the other night. Before I started painting these little still lifes I wasn't even aware of red pears. Now I buy them all the time.

Indian Hill 5x7

I saw these clouds above Indian Hill on my drive up to work this morning. I didn't have time to stop and paint them so I did my best to commit them to memory and I started painting as soon as I got to school. I had about 45 minutes before any students showed up so I got a pretty good start on it. It was kind of fun having the freedom to sort of wing it.

American River 7x7

This is the American River near my house. It was pouring rain today. I stood under a bridge while paining this.

Sacramento River #2 7x7

There was finally a big enough break in the weather for me to get a painting in. It was still a bit overcast but the sun broke through a few times and kept things interesting.

Another calendula picked on a cold, windy morning. Nothing else blooms in conditions like this! This one is in an antique ink well.

avocado and water 7x5

I think one of the tricks to painting avocados is to use one that is a little under ripe. They seem to stay nice and green longer.

calendula #5 5x7

Calendula are the tough little soldiers of the flower world. It was about 35 degrees this morning and raining. A small group of these were blooming behind the science classroom. They are vibrant and tough. I like 'em.

cocktail onions #2 5x7

I painted some cocktail onions a while ago when I first started this project. I like this painting better. It seems more cohesive to me. You can compare it to the other one by clicking here.

extinguisher #2 7x7

I had fun setting up all these cylinders. The canvas roll is very fun to paint. It's always a little bit different. This is a good thing because it's pretty heavy and a real pain to move.

Ding Dongs are Hohos with a different shape. I wonder which one sells better.

woods 7x7

These woods are on the other side of a small lake near where I work. It's about a half hour walk to get to them. I wasn't sure if I would find anything worth painting when I started walking, but it was a nice day so I went. By the time I got to the other side of the lake it was overcast. I didn't have time to go anywhere else as it was late afternoon and I was rapidly loosing what crummy light I had. I went ahead and painted these sort of gloomy woods anyhow. I'm glad I did.

marina 7x7

This is River Bank Marina as seen from Discovery Park in Sacramento. I lettered countless boats at this marina when I was painting signs full time. It was one of my favorite places to work during the summer. My customers were always very nice and I invariably got more business from the other boat owners while I worked.

This painting is available through my new gallery, Kasini House.

forebay 7x7

This is a small lake near highway 49 and Bell road. The Bear River canal flows into it and out of it. There is a great variety of plants growing along the shoreline.

I liked the reflective quality of this paint can. I added the bottle of Cascade so there would be something for it to reflect.

fire extinguisher 7x7

In addition to the overhead projectors in my room, I also have a couple of ancient opaque projectors. Neither one of them works. I keep them around because they look so cool. The blue-green that all scholastic appliances of a certain vintage seem to be painted is particularly attractive to me. I added the palm sander and fire extinguisher as warm counter points to the projector.

This painting is available through my new gallery, Kasini House.

projector 7x7

I have a small collection of old overhead projectors in my classroom. The oldest one is the one that I used when I was a full time sign painter. My students still use them to layout projects. I keep them around for spare parts. I've never had to buy a new one.

canvas table 7x7

This is the table that I use to stretch canvasses on in my classroom. It was a lot of fun to change the scale for this still life. I don't think it's quite a broad enough view to be considered an interior. It's nice to have more objects interacting in a wider space. In that regard it's a little more like a landscape. I think I'll do some more of these.

This painting is available through my new gallery, Kasini House.

pink snoball 6x6

It took me a while to find one, but I finally did. The elusive pink snoball. It's not even a Hostess snoball. It's a Mrs. Freshley's, which is obviously a knock off and a rip off. All I can say is, I did it for art.

dots #2 6x6

I found a great little local mini-mart. They sell the small boxes of Dots, which are usually just available around here right before halloween, and they also have pink Hostess Snoballs! I didn't get one today but I will soon!

hohos 6x6

I borrowed this light green t-shirt from my wife for the background. It works well as a contrasting color for the dark browns of the Hoho and the white of the milk.
I think today was the last fine day we're going to have around here for a while. I wanted to do a landscape but my tripod broke and I was too lazy to haul my old easel out.

These yellow cupcakes were brought to my attention a few days ago (thanks Kathy!). Even though I don't really remember then as a kid I thought I'd go ahead and paint one. I kind of like how the yellow looks on the blue background.
