water and eggplant 10x8

I haven't had much time to paint lately. I'm trying to remedy that.

two peaches with water 12x9

It's fun doing these slightly larger still-lifes. I like being able to give them a little more breathing room.

Coon Creek 6x8

The Opening for the Winters Plein Air Festival was this evening. It was great fun. I met a lot of very nice people. Briggs and Co. puts on a fantastic event. I will definitely be doing it again next year.
Coon Creek is on the Seven Pools trail out at Hidden Falls Regional Park in Auburn

shore line 4.5x5

I have been thinking and reading a lot about painting water lately and I wanted to try some things. I decided to approach things a little differently and, instead of going outside to paint today, I copied a painting that I found on Armand Cabrera's excellent blog. I didn't try to reproduce his piece stroke for stroke. I was trying to use color in a similar way to capture the dual transparent and reflective quality of the water. I've been wanting to try this from life for a while but it's a fairly daunting prospect for me and I felt like I would be better prepared for a plein air session if I copied a couple by people who had already mastered the idea. There are some wonderful articles on painting water on James Gurney's blog. If you look closely you can see a bunch of dirt stuck to this painting. I cleverly dropped it face down so it would look more like a plein air piece.

Some more rocks near the Rainbow Bridge.

rock study 8x6

These rocks are just below the old Rainbow Bridge in Folsom. I've seen them a thousand times. The other day I was returning from painting in a different spot when I saw them with the late afternoon sun hitting them from the side.

wave study 6x8

This is the view when looking straight out to sea from Irish Beach. I came pretty close to doing what I set out to do with this simple little painting. My wife likes it too so I'm going to keep it.

water slide #2 10x8

Last weekend I donated the earlier water slide painting to the KVIE art auction. It's actually a fairly prestigious local juried show. The ladies who were checking the art in seemed to like the painting and they were very nice. I hope I get in. Of course the day after donating the painting I got an email from someone who wanted to buy it so I went ahead and did another. This one is a slightly different view and was painted earlier in the day.
