opo squash 4x8
My sister went to see Nick Cave in San Francisco a few days ago and all I got was this strange vegetable! She picked it up in Little Saigon. She liked the colors and thought it would make a nice painting. Sold

Well, it is a very nice painting, with the juxtaposition of those complimentary colors, and all. It would look really good next to its chromatic opposite... an eggplant.
I was a bit chagrined to find out Mr. Opo (a.k.a. calabash, Italian edible gourd, long fruited gourd, long melon, long squash, peh poh, woo lo kua, hu lu gua, New Guinea bean, Tasmania bean, snake gourd, suzza melon, zuzza, yugao, po gua, kwa kwa or hu gua, upo, cucuzza, bau, dudhi or lauki) is a member of my least-favorite veggie family.
Just count your lucky stars I couldn't afford the durian...
I am an artist living in Northern California. In 1993 I graduated from
U.C. Davis where I took classes from Wayne Thiebaud, Dave Hollowell and Roy DeForest. I currently teach high school art in Placer County California. On this blog I have posted 1000 paintings in as many days. I took a break from that strict schedule for a couple of years but since the beginning of 2014 I have been completing one small painting on a daily basis. The practice of completing a painting a day suits my disposition and aesthetic. I have also found that modeling this sort of daily practice for my students is important. I am making these paintings available on ebay. Thanks for stopping by and check back often if you like what you see.

Ah yes, the zucchini wars...
Just be glad that the opo squash can't paint you!
