I have really laid off the posting lately. I will be showing a selection of recent landscapes at the Lake Forest Cafe in Folsom next month and I have been busy getting things finished and framed. I would encourage you to check out the show. The Lake Forest makes great omelets and the coffee is fantastic.

Winters bluff 8x6

I went out to Winters again and did a pretty epic hike up near lake Berryessa. I was hoping to get up near some cool rock outcrops that I could see from the road. The trail was very steep and quite spectacular, unfortunately it was also quite windy and nearly impossible to set up my pochade. I did this painting just to document the trouble I went through to get to this spot. I was too miserable to have any hope of it coming out well.

It's hot and smoky during the day but the nights are pleasant. There was even a little bit of a breeze this evening.

I'm not sure when this smoke is going to clear up. Things have been burning for about a week now. Every day the sun is obscured by dense gray smoke. I figured I might as well get out and document it.

I've painted this spot a couple of times before. It's about a five minute walk from my house. Next time I paint it I'm going to get out there in the morning.

We had some rain showers today. This is the view from the top of the bluff across Lake Natoma. It wasn't as windy as yesterday. It's great to be outside on a day like this. It'll be hot here soon enough.

This field is across the street from my house. It's the top of the bluff above Lake Natoma. I am discovering that there are some nice painting spots within easy walking distance from my house.

This is the bluff along the American river just upstream of the old Fair Oaks bridge. I thought the palm tree growing out of it was kind of cool looking.

I got down to the lake a little before 10:00 this morning. It was a really beautiful day. I was painting in a tee shirt which is a nice change from some of the freezing temperatures that I've endured lately.
A couple of other painters showed up a little while after I started. Judy and Kaitlin were a teacher and student from Casa Roble high school. Kaitlin is doing her senior project on impressionist painting. They were very nice and fun to talk to. It was sort of funny hearing their conversation, wondering whether or not to include the near shore in the composition. The painting I did a couple of days ago has the near shore and this one does not, so I could really relate!

I like living right next to the lake. This is at Negro Bar (that's really what it's called). It's about five minutes from my house. The bluff is a great thing to paint. I'm usually there in the afternoon so it's in shadow. I'm going to get out there some morning and paint it when the sun is hitting it. Maybe this weekend.
