Serene Lakes #2 8x6

One of the things Terry had us do last weekend was paint little thumbnails to plan out composition. I had never done this before. I figured that these little plein aire studies were already so small that they were basically just thumbnails anyway. I was surprised to find out just how much a simple thumbnail helped me organize the painting.

It is all about having a plan and sticking to it. I like to do a thumbnail sketch in figure painting as well, because if the model moves I have the information in the drawing to help me, same goes with the light outdoors. Good stuff we learned at the workshop.

Sounds like a great workshop you attended. I try to stay in the habit of making a sketch before I start a painting.......and it is the times I don't that the painting always suffers.
