confluence 8x10

This is looking up the middle fork of the American River from the confluence down below Auburn. The view is from the spot where I parked yesterday when I painted No Hands Bridge. I liked the view and made a mental note to come back.

No Hands Bridge #7 8x10

It got up to 107 in Auburn today and the air was pretty unhealthy. The haze really amplified the atmospheric perspective and turned everything a bit brown. I actually like the muted tones of these paintings. I picked up a mask at the drug store. Hopefully it's keeping most of the bad stuff out of my lungs.

quarry tree 8x10

It's about little over a mile to hike in to the old Cool limestone quarry. It was pretty hot today but worth the long walk.

quarry #2 8x10

Looking across the middle fork canyon at the Cool limestone quarry. When my sister and I were kids we always thought this would be the perfect spot to use a the entrance to the Mines of Moria should anyone ever film The Lord of the Rings. I guess no one told Peter Jackson.

dam overlook 10x9

The Auburn Dam has been a contentious topic in Placer County for over forty years. This is a view of the site from the overlook.

No Hands Bridge #6 12x9

12x9 is big for me. This one took a bit longer than I usually spend on a painting after work. When I got down to the river I realized that I had left all of my smaller panels in my trunk. I almost went back up to get one because I wasn't sure I wanted to commit to the time required for a bigger piece. ironically, I was too lazy to walk back to the car so I ended up spending more time on the painting. I'm glad I did.

Wolf Ridge #2 10x8

This is painted from the upstream side of the same formation that I painted a couple of days ago. The back lighting was a challenge. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Wolf Ridge 8x10

This rock formation is downhill from Mammoth bar on the middle fork of the American river near Auburn. There are actually a few rock climbs on it that I climbed years ago. It looks too hard now. There is a bit of ancient graffiti on it that reads "wolf ridge" with an arrow pointing up. I don't know if that's actually the name of the formation but it's what we always called it so I guess that's good enough. There's a lot of great stuff to paint down here. I'll be back.

This is the American River just below No Hands Bridge in Auburn.

No Hands Bridge #5 9x7

One again, No Hands Bridge. It actually has a hand rail now. I don't think it adds much to it, aesthetically speaking, so I don't paint it.

Folsom Lake #2 7x7

This is a view of Folsom Lake from the top of Auburn Folsom Road. The lake is very low right now and shows ups as only a slight sliver from this vantage point. The haze was fun to paint.

Palm Avenue 7x7

I used a couple of sketches and a photograph and then painted this at home. I prefer to paint on location but I would have had to be in the middle of the street to do this. This is also the first time I've painted on linen. I bought some pre-primed and mounted it to masonite. I can see why it's so popular!

Clementine Dam #2 7x7

In spite of the fore casted rain, it was mostly clear today. I took the opportunity to get back out to Lake Clementine to paint the dam again. I'm trying to be less fussy in my painting.

No Hands Bridge #4 7x7

It snowed in Auburn yesterday. Today was unexpectedly clear so I decided to go to one of my favorite places to paint. Even though it didn't snow, it was still quite cold in the canyon.

forebay 7x7

This is a small lake near highway 49 and Bell road. The Bear River canal flows into it and out of it. There is a great variety of plants growing along the shoreline.

This painting is available through my new gallery, Kasini House.

No Hands Bridge #2 7x7

I made it out to the river this afternoon before the canyon was completely in shadow. Unfortunately, I forgot part of my easel so I couldn't paint. I had a pencil though and I did a detailed drawing on a panel and made a bunch of color and value notes. I then finished the painting from memory when I got home. This is the result.
