apartment #2 8x6

I painted another view of this apartment building a while ago. The earlier version was done in the late morning and this one was done at dusk.

Rattle Snake Bar #6 8x6

This this the view while standing in the partially dry lake bed and looking up at the shoreline at Rattlesnake Bar. I liked all the different earth tones.

Folsom Dam 8x6

This is Folsom Dam as seen from Beal's point. I bought some cherries from a roadside stand today and was planning on painting them but it was just too nice a day to pass up.

Granite Bay #3 10x8

There are a lot of interesting granite outcroppings out at Beek's Bight at Granite Bay. The bike ride my wife and I did a couple of days ago went through here and I really enjoyed the scenery.

American River #5 8x6

Looking toward Folsom Dam from near the old Rainbow Bridge. I've painted this part of the river before in the morning. Today I got out at about 6:00 p.m. I had a little higher vantage point than the last time I painted here. I've only done a few landscapes that don't have any sky in them. It can be a bit disorienting for me.

outcrop 7x5

My wife and I went on a long mountain bike ride at Folsom Lake today. It was our twenty-third anniversary. We rode about twenty five miles, much of it through sand. It was pretty strenuous although we saw many paint-worthy bits of landscape. I did something a little different and put this little sketch together from impressions I remembered from the ride. I'm not sure how successful it is as a painting, but I enjoyed the process and think there is some potential for more exercises like this as I get more comfortable with the process.

rain #2 8x6

We had some rain showers today. This is the view from the top of the bluff across Lake Natoma. It wasn't as windy as yesterday. It's great to be outside on a day like this. It'll be hot here soon enough.

rain 10x8

I see this view every day when I drive home from work. I liked these rain clouds so I decided to pull over and paint 'em. It was kind of nice to work right out of my trunk.

dead tree #2 8x10

I went down to Rattlesnake bar again today. It was a nice day but very windy. I had to keep one hand on my pochade while I painted 'cause I was afraid it might tip over. I have to say though, that the wind is a huge improvement over the 100 plus degree weather we've had for the last few days.

Rattlesnake Bar #5 10x8

Slowly but surely the lake is filling up. I do hope it gets higher than this.

quarry #2 8x10

Looking across the middle fork canyon at the Cool limestone quarry. When my sister and I were kids we always thought this would be the perfect spot to use a the entrance to the Mines of Moria should anyone ever film The Lord of the Rings. I guess no one told Peter Jackson.

dam overlook 10x9

The Auburn Dam has been a contentious topic in Placer County for over forty years. This is a view of the site from the overlook.

dead tree 8x10

I came across this dead tree while walking near my house yesterday. I think I would have liked to paint it a bit earlier in the day with the light coming more from the side but it was about 103 degrees so I waited until about six o'clock. The sun was directly behind me at that time.

bluff top 8x6

This field is across the street from my house. It's the top of the bluff above Lake Natoma. I am discovering that there are some nice painting spots within easy walking distance from my house.

sunset 7x6

I saw this as I was driving home this evening. an thought it would be fun to try to paint. I did it from memory in my garage. It's pretty simple but I'm happy with how it turned out. I'd like to paint on location when the sun is going down some time but I don't think I'm fast enough right now.

I got a bit tight on this one. I'm not too happy with it. I felt stiff. Annie was very patient with me.

Marrissa 9x7

There's not enough time to paint all the things I'm interested in. These student portraits are always fun to do and I don't use as much gas as I do when I go out to do a landscape.

Ronnie 9x7

I did this one before lunch in class. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I'm getting more comfortable with this limited palette.

This is the view from the bluff near my house. The sun was going down when I started. It was a fun race.

No Hands Bridge #6 12x9

12x9 is big for me. This one took a bit longer than I usually spend on a painting after work. When I got down to the river I realized that I had left all of my smaller panels in my trunk. I almost went back up to get one because I wasn't sure I wanted to commit to the time required for a bigger piece. ironically, I was too lazy to walk back to the car so I ended up spending more time on the painting. I'm glad I did.

Richie 9x7

This was a fun one. Richie has a great face and he was fun to talk to while I was painting. I used the Zorn Palette again for this one. I'm getting a bit more comfortable with it. I like the cool reflected light on the shadow side of his face. Even though it's black mixed with white it reads as blue because of the warmer tones on the lit side of his face.

I like the pale green in the unripe part of this strawberry. I'll probably be eating this with my cereal tomorrow morning.

water slide 8x10

This water slide is at Lembi park in Folsom. I was about 30 minutes into my first effort and I had to wipe it off. This one worked our a little better. I was again attracted by the geometry of the thing. I can easily see doing a whole series of water slide paintings. They are really quite graceful. I decided to donate this painting to KVIE's annual art auction.

bridge construction 10x8

I rode my bike out tho the site of the new bridge below Folsom Dam this afternoon. The sun was pretty much right behind me so there aren't a lot of shadows helping to define the forms of these hills. I think the flatness of the light emphasizes the geometry of the neutral toned dirt piles and that's what attracted me to this scene in the first place.

calendula #9 5x7

There is just a riot of flowers at school right now. Painting intimate little still lifes like this is a nice break from landscapes. Time is not such a big factor. I can sort of putter around with it over the course of the day instead of racing the sun.
